Breeding Specialist (2101665) – Acampo, CA

Where the Chemistry Happens…

This position will assist the Breeder in the development of a commercial melon pipelines and all aspects of the melon breeding program with the objective of developing superior varieties with enhanced input and output traits.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Assist and support in all breeding activities, planning, implementation and evaluation

  • Maintain breeding database according to program and company policies

  • Organize, manage and maintain updated seed inventory

  • Execute field and greenhouse techniques by working hands-on, as well as, supervising technician specialists, seasonal and/or contract laborers to optimize the efficiency and control the labor cost within realized budget

  • Design and plan, and after approval of the breeder, implement, and execute breeding trials in cooperation with screening specialists and product specialist

  • Ensure that quality data is collected from trials

  • Organize and enter data in database

  • Assist in coordinating research function such as pathology tests, cell biology services and marker assist breeding under the direction of Breeder

  • Coordinate with Farm team in greenhouse management and operation to ensure clean production of transplants and seeds

  • Coordinate with Farm team in field planning, transplanting, and management


  • BS or MS in horticulture, plant breeding, genetics or closely related field

  • 1 or more years of experience in carrying out trials in plant breeding or related discipline

  • Experience in the melon breeding is a desirable

  • Working knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures, genetics and plant breeding, and familiar with experimental design and statistical analysis

  • Drives results; takes personal responsibility for decisions and actions have sense of ownership

  • Excellent organizational, time management and motivational skills, accurate record keeping and attention to details

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands

  • Manage complexity: acquire data from multiple and diverse sources when solving problems; evaluate pros and cons, risks and benefits of different solution/options

  • Effective communication skills and ability to establish efficient cooperation within teams as well other teams

  • Ability to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization and give clear directions and accuracy in administrating information

  • Must be able to work independently and must also be a team player

  • Computer skills related to data management (data collection, uploading and processing); proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Language skills: English required, bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
