Where the Chemistry Happens

The BASF Attapulgus, Georgia site manufactures catalyst for the global refining industry.

The incumbent in this position will provide maintenance mechanical support to BASF Attapulgus Operations with a Safety First mindset. The incumbent will be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial equipment. They will use a variety of hand tools, such as hammers, wrenches, sockets, pliers, and impacts for equipment repair; equipment for welding and cutting for fabrication; as well as calipers, measuring tapes, torque wrenches and lasers for precision maintenance.

We are seeking a professional like you to join our team. In this role, your responsibilities include the ability to:

Recognize and practice safe work habits in all facets of daily duties

Install, rearrange, and align complex equipment

Diagnose complex equipment failures

  • Dismantle, repair, and reassemble complex equipment

  • Perform work in the mechanic's skill area such as fabrication, assembly, welding, burning, cutting and pipefitting

  • Apply cutting welding methods, to include - oxyacetylene, plasma arc, shielded arc, tungsten arc, flux cored, carbon arc cutting and gouging, and submerged arc

  • Occasionally perform work in other trades (pipefitter, rigger, rough carpentry, machinist, etc.)

  • Use typical mechanic's tools and inspection gages

  • Work from drawings, verbal instructions or sketches

  • Clean debris and lubricant from parts, work area and equipment

  • Operate production equipment to check work as required

  • Inspect own and others’ work for quality and dimensional requirements

  • Use typical tool room inspection equipment and gage.

  • Read, comprehend, and execute tasks and concepts found in technical operating and maintenance manuals

  • Repair piping and valves

  • Install varying lengths of new pipe, valves, and control devices for equipment modification

  • Routinely rig equipment for lifting with either hoist or cranes with loads that routinely run several thousand pounds

  • Use basic computer skills to access CMMS information

  • Work with water soluble and oil-based lubricants

  • Work on ladders, scaffolds and in pits

  • Develop and interpret mechanical requirements and figure necessary dimensions

  • Improvise to make timely, sound emergency repairs

  • Rework and rebuild hydraulic systems as required

  • Construct tools; obtain and/or return tools equipment, and supplies used on job such as taper attachments, gas torch equipment, power hand tools, verniers, micrometers, surface, height and thread gages, gage blocks, indicators, and sine bars

  • Keep equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition; instruct apprentices

  • Work from ladders, elevated places, or in pits when required; work in accordance with samples, prints, sketches, specifications, written and/or verbal instructions.

  • Manually lift 50 lbs. intermittently (Heavier parts are lifted using other methods)

  • Safely work in all trades (craft) areas and in noisy, dimly lit, awkward, and high areas

  • Must be able to diagnose, plan, and perform all mechanical operations necessary to modify, dismantle, repair, overhaul, and rebuild complicated plant machinery and equipment.

  • Must be able to perform assembly work requiring a high degree of accuracy, skill, and very close tolerances that are difficult to maintain.
