Purpose of the Job

At the BASF Huntsville Site, we make the chemistry and technology used in vehicle catalytic convertors and other environmental products. As part of our team, employees help us conceive, design, implement, and validate new equipment, technologies, and processes to help make our world’s environment cleaner.

Our Prototype Sample Lab (PSL) is a pilot plant operation that produces catalytic samples for the catalyst division of BASF. The PSL Engineering Tech and Trainer will support the manufacturing of catalyst samples that will be shipped to our various internal and external customers. This includes production of catalytic slurry as well as coating of substrates. The catalytic samples produced by the PSL will support new product development, R&D activities, technology transfer & scale-up, customer testing, competition awards, and small lot / service production. The PSL Engineering Tech and Trainer will support PSL Process Engineering activities as well as lead all departmental training initiatives, including the development of procedures, visual aids, and presentations for training materials.

Knowledge and Experience

• Must have good understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment, and procedures

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Must have intermediate to advanced skills with MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint

• Must have good problem solving, root-cause analysis, and some exposure to six-sigma / lean methodologies and the capability to develop further in these areas

• Must be capable of composing well organized outlines and instructions in MS Word for operating procedures. Must be capable of creating detailed process descriptions, images and diagrams using MS Word and PowerPoint to be used in various training materials.

• Good technical writing skills are a must

• Must be able to lead small projects and coordinate activities to implement changes via BASF MOC process

• Ability to interpret process data and perform calculations as needed for setting catalyst manufacturing operating parameters and evaluation of coated lot data

• Must have a good understanding of safety practices and be able to perform various departmental audits as required

• Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.

• Ability to work well with other departments, sites, and personnel

• Ability to coach and motivate others

• Must be willing and able to work various shifts, including night shift and overtime work

• Up to 10% travel could be required for capital project and new equipment development / purchase / installation

Principal Responsibilities

• Support PSL process engineering projects and daily activities including

o Ordering of equipment and supplies in SAP

o Utilization of BASF management of change (MOC) process to plan, track, organize and implement process improvements

o Targeting and lot evaluation activities for PSL sample orders as needed, work with production groups for PSL production / service order handling process

o Learn and utilize lean, six sigma, and statistical methods to identify opportunities for improvement through PSL operations

o Support key PSL process improvement and capital projects, continually look for opportunities to improve equipment and reduce process waste.

o Investigation of PSL quality issues via analysis of process data in the HPOD manufacturing system

o Tracking and purchasing of hoses, machine tooling, caps / plugs and other common-use components for maintaining PSL equipment and management of hose / cap & plug programs

o Coordinate PSL equipment preventative and corrective maintenance activities with site maintenance teams

o Ensure that equipment is operated in compliance with all environmental regulations/permits during training

• Serve as primary departmental subject matter expert, trainer, and creator / editor of procedures and training materials for PSL. Key trainer responsibilities include:

o Develop and implement a standardized training process that complies with all regulatory/Corporate requirements. Ensure that training activities are performed in accordance with all BASF and OSHA safety policies

o Train and develop new employees, existing employees and contract employees in the PSL area

o Support safe, reliable performance of duties by ensuring that training activities comply with Site, Corporate, Quality and regulatory standards related to operating procedures

o Reinforce housekeeping and performance standards through training

o Prepare and present instructional materials for the PSL

o Lead OJT training classes as requested/required

o Develop and conduct monthly job/ document field audits

o Create and run training reports as requested

o Work with supervisors to assist in the coordination and scheduling of continuous training requirements as defined

o Document owner for PSL. Must be capable of:

• Creating and updating Quality Management System documentation for all operating jobs: Work Instructions, Visual Aids, SOP’s, etc.

• Reviewing all procedures for the department, make the necessary updates with approval, and update PSL employees regarding any procedural changes

• Conducting and completing annual document audits as required

o Conduct mobile equipment operator (MEO) training, procedural certification and re-certification as required and/or needed for PSL employees.

o Monitor re-certification schedules and conduct the necessary training to ensure timely compliance with guidelines for MEO training, job-specific skills and EHS compliance training

o Maintain training records and the associated documentation

• Support PSL departmental objectives and KPI’s

• Perform PSL audits as needed for 5S, safety, and compliance

• Other duties and assignments as necessary

Work environment/Physical demands

• Although this job will require office work, the employee could be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals in a manufacturing plant environment. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles.

• Outside weather conditions can also be a factor, though most of the work will take place within the sample production buildings. The noise level in the work environment is typically mild.

• The use of a variety of personal protective equipment will be required including safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, ear plugs, and sometimes hard hats, protective suits and goggles.

• This position will typically work a day shift / weekday schedule. However, there could be times when night shift, weekend shift, or rotating shift work could be required for periods.
